Ruthie Foster- Keeping It Real

23 September, 2009

Sometimes, only the Blues can make me feel better. There’s something about blues music that makes me feel like someone understands what I’m going through, and generally has it way worse than I do.

One of my favorite blues performers is Ruthie Foster. In her album The Truth According To Ruthie Foster she lays it out the way many of us need to hear it. “Truth is right where you are,” is her theme and her songs are full of the ideas of finding yourself and sticking to that knowledge no matter what life throws at you. That’s why I love her. Ruthie keeps it real.

Hot For Teacher Not So Hot

22 September, 2009

Being a single woman, I thought I’d heard every cheesy pick up line out there. Once I started teaching high school, a new one emerged. As soon as I state my profession, the majority of men I date start channeling David Lee Roth.

If I have to have to hear another recitation of Hot for Teacher, I just might freak out. I need to find a good song to sing back. How about You’re So Vain or Walk Away or best choice yet So Much Cooler Online? If only they looked more like the younger version of David Lee Roth than the post-Van Halen one, I might have more tolerance.

New White Stripes Documentary

21 September, 2009

I am a White Stripes fan. I love their quirky, unique style. They rarely share much about themselves in public, but that is about to change. They gave permission for a film documentary to be made. The movie aired this past week at a film festival. In the documentary, the filmmaker gets up close and personal, is allowed to film many private moments, and shows Jack and Meg interacting in ways that the public does not get to see. For White Stripes fans, this will be an awesome chance to learn more about the reclusive duo. I wonder when it’s coming to a theater near me?

Devo Back On Stage

18 September, 2009

The 1980’s were a time of strange musical experimentation. Many groups and performers seemed to push the envelope of weirdness. One group I’ve always thought of in the strange category is Devo. I have images in my head of them wearing the hats that look like large Lego pieces and dancing robotically while singing “whip it good.” Now Devo has signed a new record deal and is preparing to tour the country. How will Devo’s signature style fit in the 21st century? I believe their new audience will be looking for a little more substance than just being stranger than anyone else. We’ll see what they can deliver.
